Dog Age Calculator: Dog Years to Human Years
This calculator turns a dog's age into an equivalent human age. Dogs of different sizes age at very different speeds, so you pick one of four size classes based on adult weight: small (up to 9 kg), medium (9–23 kg), large (23–41 kg) or giant (over 41 kg). The result shows the human-year figure, the dog's life stage and the typical life expectancy for that size, and the tool also works in the opposite direction, converting a human age into dog years and months.
How the conversion works
A dog's first year covers the equivalent of a whole adolescence: roughly 15 human years for small and medium dogs, 14 for large ones and about 12 for giants. By the second birthday a small or medium dog stands at around 24 human years, a large or giant one at 22. After that the sizes drift apart: each further year counts as 4 human years for a small dog, 4.3 for a medium one and 7 for large and giant breeds. This is why a Great Dane counts as a senior at 6 while a Chihuahua only reaches that stage at 10; the calculator sets the senior threshold at 10, 8, 7 or 6 years depending on the class. For puppies under one year the age is entered in months and scaled within the first-year block, so a 6-month-old medium puppy comes out at about 8 human years.
The classes go by adult weight, not breed, so mixed breeds follow the same logic. Large and giant dogs age at the same pace from age two onward; what separates them is the slower first two years and, above all, life expectancy, which the tool shows next to the result: 12–16 years for small dogs, 10–13 for medium, 9–12 for large and 6–9 for giant breeds.
Worked examples
A 5-year-old medium dog: 24 human years for the first two years, then three more years at 4.3 each, so 24 + 12.9 = 36.9, rounded to 37 human years, an adult. In reverse: to find the dog age matching a 40-year-old human for a small dog, subtract the 24 human years covered by the first two dog years, divide the remaining 16 by 4 and add the 2 years back, which gives exactly 6 dog years.
Formula and reference table
Small: human age = 24 + 4 × (dog age − 2)
Medium: human age = 24 + 4.3 × (dog age − 2)
Large: human age = 22 + 7 × (dog age − 2)
Giant: human age = 22 + 7 × (dog age − 2)
First year: small/medium 15, large 14, giant 12
