This calculator turns a birth month, day and hour into your rising sign, also called the ascendant: the zodiac sign that was climbing the eastern horizon the moment you were born. It is a separate reading from your sun sign, which only tracks the calendar date, so two people born on the same day can still end up with two different ascendants once birth hour is factored in.

How the calculation works

The tool first places your birth date on the standard tropical calendar to find your sun sign. Aries runs from 21 March to 19 April, Taurus from 20 April to 20 May, and so on through Pisces. It then shifts that sign forward or back using your birth hour. Earth turns 360° every 24 hours, and each zodiac sign covers 30° of sky, so the horizon sweeps through one sign roughly every two hours. The shift is anchored to the 06:00–07:59 window, where the ascendant matches the sun sign; every two-hour block earlier or later moves the result one sign back or forward. Because the exact ascendant degree also depends on birth latitude and longitude, this calculator applies a fixed two-hour-per-sign estimate rather than plotting a full birth chart. It identifies the sign, not the precise degree.

Worked example

Take a birth date of 14 May at 09:00. That date falls inside the Taurus window (20 April–20 May), so the sun sign is Taurus. A birth hour of 09:00 sits in the 08:00–09:59 block, one step past the 06:00–07:59 baseline, so the ascendant moves one sign forward, from Taurus to Gemini. That is the rising sign the calculator returns for that birth time. Shift the same birth date two hours earlier, to 07:00, and the hour falls back inside the baseline block, so the rising sign becomes Taurus itself, identical to the sun sign.
