YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

This tool pulls the thumbnail images YouTube already stores for a video and lets you save any of them as a file. Paste a video link, and it reads out the video ID to build direct image links at four fixed sizes, from 120x90 up to 1280x720. Every image comes straight from YouTube's own image servers, not a separate thumbnail-generation service, so no account or upload is involved.

How it works

The tool reads the 11-character video ID out of whatever link you paste, including a standard watch link, a youtu.be short link, an embed link, or a Shorts link. YouTube stores a fixed set of thumbnail images for every uploaded video at predictable addresses built from that ID, so once the ID is found, the tool assembles four direct image links, one per size, without generating or rendering anything itself. Everything runs in the browser, and no video or file is uploaded to reach this point, only a short piece of text. Because each of the four sizes is fetched independently, one image failing to load does not affect the other three.

If the pasted text does not match any of those link patterns, or the matched segment is not exactly 11 characters, no ID can be extracted and an inline error message appears instead of a set of previews.

Example

Pasting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ extracts the ID dQw4w9WgXcQ and loads four previews: 1280x720 (Maximum Resolution), 480x360 (High Quality), 320x180 (Medium Quality), and 120x90 (Standard Quality). The previews appear in a two-column grid a short moment after the ID is matched, replacing four placeholder tiles shown while the request is in progress. The Download button on each tile saves that image using a name built from the video ID and quality level, for example yt-thumbnail-dQw4w9WgXcQ-max.jpg. If the browser blocks the direct save, the image opens in a new tab so it can be saved manually. A separate Reset control clears the pasted link and returns the tool to its starting state, ready for a new URL without reloading the page.

Direct thumbnail links

Every size follows the same address pattern, built from the video ID and a fixed file name, so the pattern below can be copied and edited with any video ID. Swapping the file name for one of the four listed below switches which size loads at that address. The smallest of the four, at 120x90, is a small fraction of the pixel count of the largest at 1280x720, so the right size depends on where the image will be used.
