Cat Age Calculator: Converting Cat Years to Human Years

This calculator converts a cat's age in years and months into a human-age equivalent, using the life-stage method published by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP). It also works in reverse, turning a human age back into the equivalent cat age in years and months.

The AAHA/AAFP conversion method

The first two years of a cat's life count for far more than later years, because kittens reach physical and sexual maturity long before a same-age human does. Six months old is treated as about 10 human years, and by one year a cat is roughly 15 human years old. The second year adds 9 more human years, putting a 2-year-old cat at 24 human years. After that, each additional cat year adds 4 human years instead of the earlier pace.

Worked example

A cat that is 2 years and 6 months old is past the steep early curve. Starting from the 24-human-year mark at 2 years, the extra 6 months add about 2 more years (half of the 4-year annual rate), for a human-age equivalent of 26. The calculator places this cat in the young adult life stage, and for an indoor cat it notes a typical life expectancy of 12 to 18 years; the same cat living outdoors would show a much shorter range of 2 to 5 years, since the lifestyle selection changes only that note, not the age conversion.

Reverse mode: human age to cat age

For a human age of 50, the reverse formula starts at 2 cat years and adds one cat year for every 4 human years above 24, giving 8 years and 6 months in cat years.

The conversion runs across four age bands:

Forward (cat age -> human age):
0-6 months: Human age = (months / 6) x 10
6-12 months: Human age = 10 + ((months - 6) / 6) x 5
1-2 years: Human age = 15 + (years - 1) x 9
2+ years: Human age = 24 + (years - 2) x 4

Reverse (human age -> cat age):
Human age <= 10: Cat years = (human age / 10) x 0.5
Human age 10-15: Cat years = 0.5 + ((human age - 10) / 5) x 0.5
Human age 15-24: Cat years = 1 + (human age - 15) / 9
Human age > 24: Cat years = 2 + (human age - 24) / 4
